The Stakes: Is staying with your yoga practice a challenge?
This is an example of an image that can be tricky to work with. I had to narrow the width of this column (using %’s only, NOT pixels!) It also looks weird, as her arm is cut off. This is just to demonstrate that choosing the correct photo for this effect AND for desktop, tablet, and phone views is important.
This background image is masked (hence the rounded effect) at the SECTION level, which isn’t at the column level and won’t automatically “stack” when the screen is a certain threshold smaller size. (This is often called the “break” point in mobile responsiveness terms)
Another solution is to use an entirely different layout: Section, row, and column for mobile view. You can disable the desktop views on mobile devices. More on this in the mobile optimization lesson.
The Stakes: Is staying with your yoga practice a challenge?
This is an example that doesn’t make use of the cool but possibly tricky masking feature. They may look fantastic in desktop views and big screens, OK on tablets, and unacceptably awful on small screens.
The reason? Mobile optimization is about columns, and column stacking. What this means is that the picture you see on the left and this column of text you are reading will automatically stack in DIVI. You don’t have to do anything.
But playing with the background image in BLUE.. like the image below, doesn’t “translate” via stacking. Instead, it just looks like a blob on the right side and an awkward skinny column of text on the left.
So I’ve created a different “stackable” layout just for mobile devices, saving the masking effect for bigger 16:9 aspect ratio screens.
Right now you see both options. I’ll be showing you how to disable this section you are reading in Desktop view, and the one above this one, with the masking effect, in Mobile views. It’s easy!
Your USP: It’s like having an on-demand library of classes and a coach in your back pocket
Practicing from home doesn’t always make it easy to stay consistent. There are so many distractions.
That’s why we..
Note: For this masking effect to work, choose images in which the LEFT side can be masked out. Since this is a background image that resides in a SECTION (blue) it’s not “stackable” and won’t automatically translate to mobile view. It’s not uncommon to create a separate and simple layout for mobile devices.
Again, there’s a mobile optimization lesson coming up soon. It’s not hard, but it’s easier to show you visually how it works. No code, I promise!

Note: Again, this is the “stackable” version based on columns that you can enable in mobile views and disable on the desktop, if you wish to use the masked version above.

You can use the transform and border tool to get some interesting effects. These tend to work best in a desktop view on a big screen.
If you do this, you many want to use this simpler layout for mobile devices.
Design is generally more flexible and fun in desktop views, no matter what the platform. Mobile is a small screen and it’s better to keep it simple. (More about this in one of the upcoming lessons)
